Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand the concept of plant swap and how plants grow.

Materials and Prep

  • Two small potted plants
  • Soil
  • Water
  • Planting containers
  • Gardening gloves (optional)
  • Scissors
  • Plant identification cards (can be handmade)
  • Paper and markers for making plant labels

Prior to the lesson, make sure you have the materials ready and set up a workspace for planting.

Activities

  1. Introduction: Start by explaining the concept of plant swap. Discuss how people exchange plants with each other to grow different types of plants in their gardens.
  2. Plant Identification: Show the student the two potted plants and ask them to observe the differences between them. Use the plant identification cards to label each plant with its name.
  3. Plant Swap: Explain that you will be swapping the plants, and the student's task is to plant the swapped plant in a new container. Demonstrate how to carefully remove the plant from its pot, loosen the roots, and replant it in the new container with fresh soil.
  4. Observation and Care: Discuss the importance of watering and sunlight for plant growth. Guide the student to water the plants and place them in an appropriate location with enough sunlight.
  5. Plant Labels: Have the student create labels for each plant using paper and markers. They can write the plant names and decorate the labels as they wish. Attach the labels to the plants.
  6. Plant Journal: Encourage the student to keep a plant journal to record observations and changes in the plants over time. They can draw pictures and write descriptions of the plants' growth.
