Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will have an understanding of the basic concepts of quantum physics at a kindergarten level.
Materials and Prep
- Empty glass jar
- Small toy or object
- Flashlight
- Construction paper
- Scissors
- Tape
- Pencil
Before starting the lesson, make sure you have a basic understanding of the concept of energy and light.
Activities
- Activity 1: Invisible Object
- Activity 2: Light and Shadows
Take the empty glass jar and show it to the student. Explain that you are going to make an object disappear inside the jar using quantum physics. Place the small toy or object inside the jar and cover it with the lid. Ask the student to observe the jar and try to find the object. After a few seconds, remove the lid and show the object is no longer there. Explain that in quantum physics, objects can sometimes behave in strange ways and appear to disappear.
Cut out different shapes from the construction paper, such as a circle, square, and triangle. Use the tape to attach the shapes to a wall or a flat surface. Turn off the lights in the room and use the flashlight to shine light on the shapes. Ask the student to observe the shadows created by the shapes. Explain that light can behave like both waves and particles, and in quantum physics, it can create interesting patterns and shadows.
Kindergarten Grade Talking Points
- "In quantum physics, things can sometimes disappear or appear to disappear."
- "Light can create shadows and interesting patterns."
- "Quantum physics is about how things can behave in strange ways."
- "We can use our senses to observe and learn about quantum physics."
- "Quantum physics helps us understand how things work in the world."
