Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to apply geometric concepts to solve problems and explore the connections between mathematics and the Lord of the Rings.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper
  • Pencil
  • Ruler
  • Lord of the Rings book or movie (optional)

Activities

  1. Activity 1: Map of Middle-earth

Using your ruler and pencil, create a map of Middle-earth. Include various locations from the Lord of the Rings series, such as the Shire, Rivendell, and Mordor. Use geometric shapes and measurements to accurately represent the distances between different locations.

  2. Activity 2: Designing Elven Architecture

Imagine you are an architect designing an elven city in Middle-earth. Use geometric concepts to create a blueprint for a unique elven structure. Consider the use of symmetry, angles, and shapes commonly found in elven architecture. Explain the mathematical reasoning behind your design choices.

  3. Activity 3: Journey of the Fellowship

Trace the journey of the Fellowship of the Ring on your Middle-earth map from Activity 1. Use geometric concepts, such as distance, direction, and angles, to calculate the total distance traveled by the Fellowship. Discuss how geometry can be applied to real-world scenarios, even in fictional stories like the Lord of the Rings.

Seventh Grade Talking Points

  • "Geometry is a branch of mathematics that deals with shapes, sizes, and properties of figures and spaces."
  • "In the Lord of the Rings series, various locations are described using geometric terms. For example, Mordor is depicted as a dark, volcanic land with jagged mountain ranges."
  • "Geometric concepts, such as symmetry and angles, are often used in architecture to create aesthetically pleasing and structurally sound buildings. Elven architecture in Middle-earth is known for its elegance and harmony."
  • "Understanding geometric concepts can help us solve real-world problems, such as calculating distances or designing structures. It is a practical and applicable branch of mathematics."
  • "By exploring the connections between mathematics and the Lord of the Rings, we can see how mathematics is present in various aspects of our lives, including literature and storytelling."
