Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to identify and describe different geometric shapes and their properties.
Materials and Prep
- Pencil
- Blank paper
- Ruler
- Coloring pencils or markers
Before starting the lesson, make sure you have a basic understanding of numbers and shapes.
Activities
- Draw and Identify Shapes
- Measure and Compare Sides
- Color and Count Sides
Using your blank paper and pencil, draw different geometric shapes such as squares, rectangles, circles, triangles, and hexagons. Label each shape with its name.
Take your ruler and measure the sides of each shape you drew. Compare the lengths of the sides. Which shape has the longest sides? Which shape has the shortest sides?
Choose one shape and color each side with a different coloring pencil or marker. Count the number of sides. Does the number of sides match the name of the shape?
Third Grade Talking Points
- "In geometry, we study different shapes and their properties."
- "Shapes are everywhere around us. Can you think of some examples of shapes you see in your everyday life?"
- "A square has four equal sides and four right angles. Can you find any objects that have a square shape?"
- "A rectangle has four sides, but opposite sides are longer than the other two sides. Can you think of any objects that have a rectangular shape?"
- "A circle is a shape that has no straight sides. It is round like a pizza or a ball. Can you find any objects that have a circular shape?"
- "A triangle has three sides and three angles. Can you think of any objects that have a triangular shape?"
- "A hexagon has six sides. Can you find any objects that have a hexagonal shape?"
