Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to apply basic arithmetic skills to solve ocean-themed math problems.
Materials and Prep
- Pencil
- Blank paper
No prior knowledge is required for this lesson.
Activities
-
Activity 1: Ocean Counting
Draw different ocean creatures on your paper. Count how many of each creature you drew and write the numbers next to them. For example, if you drew 3 fish, write "3" next to the fish.
-
Activity 2: Ocean Addition
Imagine you have 2 dolphins and 3 seashells. How many ocean objects do you have in total? Write an addition equation to represent this and solve it.
-
Activity 3: Ocean Subtraction
You have 5 starfish and you gave 2 to your friend. How many starfish do you have left? Write a subtraction equation to represent this and solve it.
First Grade Talking Points
- "Math is all around us, even in the ocean! Today, we will be exploring ocean-themed math problems."
- "In Activity 1, we will practice counting the different ocean creatures we draw. Counting helps us keep track of how many there are."
- "Activity 2 is all about addition. We will use our dolphins and seashells to practice adding numbers together. Addition helps us find the total when we have more than one group of things."
- "In Activity 3, we will learn about subtraction. We will use starfish to practice taking away some from a group. Subtraction helps us find out how many are left after we take some away."
