Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to identify and describe basic geometric shapes found in the ocean.
Materials and Prep
- Paper
- Pencil or crayons
- Access to the internet or books about the ocean
No prior knowledge or preparation is required for this lesson.
Activities
- Introduction: Begin by discussing the ocean and its various features. Talk about how the ocean is full of different shapes and how we can find geometric shapes in the ocean.
- Shape Hunt: Go on a virtual or real-life shape hunt in the ocean. Look for and identify shapes such as circles (like bubbles or sea anemones), squares (like coral reefs), triangles (like shark fins), and rectangles (like fish tanks or submarine windows).
- Draw and Label: Have the student choose one shape they found during the shape hunt and draw it on their paper. Encourage them to label the shape and any other details they observed.
- Shape Collage: Using magazines or printed pictures, have the student cut out various ocean-related shapes and create a collage on their paper. They can arrange and glue the shapes to form an underwater scene.
- Share and Discuss: Once the activities are completed, have the student share their drawings and collages. Discuss the different shapes they found and their characteristics.
First Grade Talking Points

- "Shapes are all around us, even in the ocean!"
- "We can find circles in the ocean, like bubbles or sea anemones."
- "Squares can be seen in the ocean too, like coral reefs."
- "Triangles are also found in the ocean, just like shark fins!"
- "Rectangles can be seen in the ocean, such as fish tanks or submarine windows."
- "Let's draw and label the shapes we found in the ocean."
- "Now, let's create a collage using different shapes to make an underwater scene."
- "Great job! We found and learned about different shapes in the ocean today."
