Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to identify the parts of a plant and understand the importance of plants in the environment.
Materials and Prep
Materials:
- Large piece of paper
- Markers or colored pencils
- Scissors
- Tape
Prep:
- Prepare a simple diagram of a plant with its parts labeled on the large piece of paper.
- Have the materials set up in a well-lit area for the activities.
Activities
1. Plant Parts Puzzle: Show the diagram of the plant and explain the different parts (roots, stem, leaves, and flowers). Cut out the labeled parts and have the student assemble them on the paper to create the complete plant.
2. Plant Life Cycle: Discuss the life cycle of a plant, starting from a seed to a mature plant. Have the student draw and label each stage of the life cycle on the paper.
Third Grade Talking Points
- Plants need roots to drink water from the ground. You can say, "Just like how we need to drink water to stay healthy, plants also need water to grow big and strong."
- The stem of a plant helps it stand up straight and carries water to the leaves. You can say, "The stem is like the plant's backbone, keeping it standing tall and helping it stay healthy."
- Leaves help the plant make food from sunlight. You can say, "Plants use their leaves to make yummy food for themselves, just like how we eat to get energy."
- Flowers are how plants make seeds for new plants. You can say, "Just like how baby animals come from their mommies, new plants come from seeds in flowers."
