Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to create a collage using only paper and scissors, and understand the basic principles of collage art.

Materials and Prep

  • Assorted colored construction paper
  • Scissors
  • Glue stick
  • Pencil
  • Ruler

No prior knowledge or preparation is needed for this lesson.

Activities

  1. Introduction: Begin by discussing what collage art is and show examples of different collage artworks. Explain that a collage is a piece of art made by combining various materials together, such as paper, fabric, or photographs.

  2. Brainstorming: Encourage the student to think about a theme or subject for their collage. It could be something they enjoy, like animals, nature, or their favorite hobby.

  3. Sketching: Have the student use a pencil and ruler to create a rough sketch of their collage design on a piece of construction paper. This will help them plan where to place different elements.

  4. Cutting and Assembling: Provide the student with different colored construction paper and scissors. Instruct them to cut out various shapes and forms that relate to their chosen theme. Once they have a collection of cutouts, they can arrange and glue them onto their sketch to create their collage.

  5. Reflection: After completing the collage, have the student reflect on their artwork. Ask them to describe the different elements they used and how they relate to their chosen theme. Encourage them to think about the overall composition and any emotions or messages they wanted to convey through their collage.

Third Grade Talking Points

  • "Collage art is a type of artwork made by combining different materials together, like paper, fabric, or photographs."
  • "A theme is a specific subject or idea that we choose to focus on. It helps us create a cohesive artwork."
  • "Sketching is a way to plan and organize our ideas before creating the final artwork. It's like making a blueprint."
  • "Cutting and assembling means we will be using scissors to cut out different shapes and forms from colored construction paper, and then gluing them onto our sketch to create our collage."
  • "Reflection is when we think about our artwork and describe what we did and how it relates to our chosen theme. We can also think about how our collage makes us feel or what message it might convey."
