Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand the concept of addition and subtraction through fun music-related activities.
Materials and Prep
You will need:
- Music player or instrument
- Paper and pencil
No prior knowledge is needed for this lesson.
Activities
- Music Math: Play a song and ask the student to clap or tap along to the beat. Then, introduce addition by asking them to add 2 claps to the beat and subtraction by asking them to subtract 1 clap from the beat.
- Lyrics Math: Choose a song with simple lyrics and ask the student to count the number of times a certain word or phrase is repeated in the chorus. Then, create addition and subtraction problems using those numbers.
Second Grade Talking Points
- "Addition means putting things together. If we have 2 music notes and we add 3 more, we have 5 notes in total."
- "Subtraction means taking things away. If we have 6 music notes and we subtract 4, we will have 2 notes left."
