Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand and apply basic arithmetic concepts using math blocks.
Materials and Prep
- Math blocks (variety of shapes and sizes)
- Pen and paper
Prior knowledge: Basic counting and recognition of numbers.
Activities
- Introduction to Math Blocks
- Counting with Math Blocks
- Addition with Math Blocks
- Subtraction with Math Blocks
Start by introducing the math blocks to the student. Explain that each block represents a number and they come in different shapes and sizes. Show examples and encourage the student to explore and play with the blocks.
Ask the student to count the number of blocks they have. Help them recognize the numbers on each block and write them down on a piece of paper. Practice counting from 1 to the highest number of blocks they have.
Choose two different shapes of math blocks and ask the student to count how many blocks of each shape they have. Then, ask them to combine the two shapes together and count the total number of blocks. Write down the addition equation using numbers and symbols (e.g., 3 + 5 = 8).
Select a shape of math blocks and ask the student to count how many blocks of that shape they have. Then, ask them to remove a certain number of blocks and count how many are left. Write down the subtraction equation using numbers and symbols (e.g., 9 - 4 = 5).
Second Grade Talking Points
- "Math blocks are a fun way to learn and practice arithmetic."
- "Each math block represents a number."
- "Counting is an important skill in math. It helps us know how many blocks we have."
- "Addition means combining numbers to find the total."
- "Subtraction means taking away or removing numbers to find what is left."
- "We can write addition and subtraction equations using numbers and symbols like + and -."
