Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will understand the concept of how heat affects the Earth's materials and will be able to apply this knowledge to baking.
Materials and Prep
Materials: flour, sugar, butter, eggs, mixing bowl, measuring cups and spoons, oven, baking sheet, and oven mitts.
Prep: Review the steps of a simple baking recipe and ensure the oven is preheated to the correct temperature.
Activities
1. Discuss the concept of heat and how it affects different materials such as butter, sugar, and flour. Use simple examples like how butter melts when heated.
2. Guide the student through the steps of a simple baking recipe, explaining how the ingredients change when exposed to heat in the oven.
3. Observe the baking process through the oven window and discuss the changes happening to the mixture as it bakes.
First Grade Talking Points
- When we put things in the oven, they get hot and change. Just like when we bake cookies, the dough changes and becomes cookies. It's because of the heat in the oven!
- The oven is like the sun shining on the Earth. It makes things warm and changes them. Just like how the sun makes the ground warm and helps plants grow.
- When we mix ingredients together to bake, they become something new. It's like how different things on Earth mix together and change to make new things, like how water and dirt make mud!
