Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to recognize and spell words from the -um word family with short and long u sounds.
Materials and Prep
You will need paper, pencils, and a whiteboard or a large sheet of paper for writing.
Before starting the lesson, make sure to review the short and long u sounds with the student.
Activities
1. Word Building: Write the letters M, t, s, a, I, f, d, r, o, g, l, h, u on the whiteboard or paper. Ask the student to form words from the -um word family using these letters (e.g., hum, gum, sum, etc.).
2. Word Sorting: Write a mix of words with short and long u sounds (e.g., sun, gum, drum, hug, slug, etc.) on separate cards. Ask the student to sort the words into two groups based on their u sound.
3. Reading and Writing: Read a short story or poem containing words from the -um word family with short and long u sounds. Then, ask the student to write down the words they hear with the different u sounds.
