Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to understand the basic structure of a plant and the process of photosynthesis through hands-on activities using Lego.
Materials and Prep
Materials:
- Lego blocks of various colors and sizes
- Green Lego baseplate
- Printed pictures of plants and flowers
Prep:
- Review basic plant structure and photosynthesis process
- Prepare the Lego blocks on a table for easy access
Activities
1. Build a Plant: Use the Lego blocks to construct a simple plant with roots, stem, leaves, and a flower. Refer to the printed pictures for guidance.
2. Photosynthesis Story: Create a story using the Lego plant model to explain the process of photosynthesis, involving sunlight, carbon dioxide, and water.
3. Role Play: Act out the roles of sunlight, carbon dioxide, water, and chlorophyll (green Lego block) in the photosynthesis process using the Lego model.
First Grade Talking Points
- Plants have roots that drink water from the ground. You can say, "Plants have roots that suck water from the soil like a straw."
- Leaves are like little factories that make food for the plant. You can say, "Leaves are like little kitchens that make food for the plant."
- Plants need sunlight to make their food. You can say, "Plants use sunlight to cook their food like we use a stove to cook."
- Plants make oxygen for us to breathe. You can say, "Plants make clean air for us to breathe just like how we need fresh air to feel good."
