Objective
By the end of this lesson, the Kindergarten student will be able to understand the basic concepts of government and citizenship through engaging activities with dolls.
Materials and Prep
- Dolls or stuffed animals
- Blank paper and crayons
- Optional: Doll-sized props like mini flags or pretend ballot boxes
No prior knowledge is required for this lesson.
Activities
- Introduce the concept of government by explaining that it is a system that helps people live together peacefully and make decisions. Use dolls or stuffed animals to act out a scenario where the dolls need to make a decision, such as what game to play or what snack to have. Encourage the student to take turns being the "leader" who makes the final decision.
- Discuss the importance of rules in a community. Ask the student to come up with rules that the dolls should follow, such as sharing toys or being kind to others. Write down the rules on a piece of paper together.
- Explain the concept of citizenship by telling the student that being a citizen means being a member of a community and following its rules. Encourage the student to think about ways they can be a good citizen in their own community, such as picking up trash or helping others.
- Engage in a pretend voting activity with the dolls. Create a simple question, such as "What color should we paint the dollhouse?" and provide two options. Have the student and the dolls vote by raising their hands or using small pieces of paper as ballots. Count the votes together and announce the winning choice.

- "Voting is a way to make decisions together. We can pretend to vote with our dolls to choose something, just like real citizens vote for leaders or important things."
