Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to apply arithmetic skills to measure and adjust ingredients in cooking and baking recipes.
Materials and Prep
Materials: Measuring cups and spoons, mixing bowls, ingredients for a simple recipe (e.g. chocolate chip cookies)
Prep: Familiarize yourself with the recipe and have all the ingredients ready.
Activities
1. Introduction to Measuring: Discuss the importance of accurate measurements in cooking and baking. Show how to use measuring cups and spoons.
2. Recipe Math: Choose a simple recipe and ask the student to help measure and adjust the ingredients, doubling or halving the recipe if needed.
3. Baking Adventure: Bake the recipe together, discussing how the measurements and adjustments affected the final product.
Fourth Grade Talking Points
- "In cooking, we use measuring cups and spoons to measure ingredients like flour and sugar."
- "If a recipe asks for 1 cup of flour and we need to make half the amount, we only need to use 1/2 cup."
- "When we double a recipe, we need to use twice as much of each ingredient."
- "Measuring accurately helps us create delicious treats like cookies and cakes."
