Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to apply arithmetic skills to accurately measure and convert ingredients for more complex recipes in cooking and baking.
Materials and Prep
Materials: Measuring cups and spoons, recipe book, ingredients for a chosen recipe
Prep: Familiarize yourself with the chosen recipe and ensure all necessary ingredients are available.
Activities
1. Choose a recipe from the recipe book that you would like to make.
2. Use measuring cups and spoons to measure out the ingredients needed for the recipe.
3. Practice converting measurements, for example, if the recipe calls for 1/2 cup of flour, how many tablespoons is that?
4. Follow the recipe to cook or bake the dish.
Fourth Grade Talking Points
- "In cooking and baking, we use measurements like cups and tablespoons to make sure we add the right amount of each ingredient."
- "When a recipe calls for a certain amount of one ingredient, we need to measure it accurately using the right tools."
- "Sometimes we need to convert measurements, for example, from cups to tablespoons, to make sure we have the right amount of each ingredient."
- "Following the recipe step by step helps us create delicious dishes and treats."
