Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to identify and describe key characteristics of dragons, and make connections between dragons and the stories they read.

Materials and Prep

Materials: Dragon picture books or stories, drawing materials (paper, crayons, markers), and a computer or tablet for online reading resources. Prep: Familiarize yourself with different dragon stories and have them ready for reading.

Activities

1. Dragon Storytime: Read a dragon story or show pictures of dragons to the student, and encourage them to describe what they see and ask questions about dragons.

2. Draw a Dragon: Have the student draw their own dragon based on the stories they've heard. Encourage them to think about what their dragon looks like and any special abilities it might have.

3. Dragon Hunt: Create a scavenger hunt for dragon-related items around the house or yard. This could include finding objects that remind them of dragons or looking for dragon shapes in nature.

Kindergarten Grade Talking Points

  • "Dragons are make-believe creatures that have big wings and can breathe fire. They are often in stories and movies, and people like to imagine what they are like."
  • "We can use our imagination to draw our own dragons. What color will your dragon be? What will it be doing in your picture?"
  • "Let's go on a dragon hunt! We can look for things that remind us of dragons, like something shiny or something with scales."
