Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to recognize and describe different elements of nature through reading and discussion.
Materials and Prep
Materials: Picture books about nature, such as "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" by Eric Carle, "We're Going on a Bear Hunt" by Michael Rosen, and "The Tiny Seed" by Eric Carle.
Prep: Familiarize yourself with the content of each book and prepare a cozy reading area with cushions or blankets.
Activities
- Read "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" and discuss the different foods the caterpillar eats, emphasizing the natural elements like fruits and leaves.
- Act out "We're Going on a Bear Hunt" by going on a pretend nature exploration around the house or yard, encountering different obstacles like long wavy grass and a deep cold river.
- Read "The Tiny Seed" and then plant seeds in small pots, discussing the process of growth and the importance of nature in sustaining life.
Preschool Grade Talking Points
- "Nature is all around us. It's the trees, flowers, and animals we see outside."
- "When the caterpillar in the story ate all the food, it turned into a beautiful butterfly. Nature is amazing!"
- "We can go on a pretend adventure like the kids in the bear hunt story. Let's imagine we're going through tall, swishy grass and splashing through a river."
- "Plants grow from tiny seeds, just like the story we read. We can plant our own seeds and watch them grow into plants."
