Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to practice basic arithmetic skills using Legos and create a Lego museum.
Materials and Prep
- Lego bricks of various sizes and colors
- Construction paper
- Markers or crayons
- Scissors
Prior knowledge of counting and basic addition and subtraction would be helpful.
Activities
- Counting Bricks: Count the number of Lego bricks you have in your collection. Write down the total number.
- Addition Challenge: Choose two different colored Lego bricks. Count how many of each color you have. Add the two numbers together to find the total number of bricks.
- Subtraction Challenge: Select a specific color of Lego bricks. Count how many you have. Remove a few bricks and count how many are left. Subtract the number of bricks removed from the original count to find out how many bricks were taken away.
- Lego Museum: Use your Lego bricks to build a museum. Create different exhibits with different quantities of bricks. For example, one exhibit can have 5 red bricks, another exhibit can have 10 blue bricks, and so on.
Kindergarten Grade Talking Points
- "Mathematics is all about numbers and counting. Today, we will be using Legos to practice our counting skills and learn about addition and subtraction."
- "Counting is important because it helps us keep track of how many things we have. Let's start by counting the number of Lego bricks we have in our collection."
- "Addition is when we combine two or more numbers to find the total. We can use Legos to help us understand addition better."
- "Subtraction is when we take away some numbers from a group. We can use Legos to practice subtraction too."
- "Now, let's use our Lego bricks to build a museum. We can create different exhibits with different quantities of bricks. This will help us visualize numbers and practice our counting skills."
