Activities
1. Observation vs. Memory: Find a visual artwork or a nature scene. First, observe it carefully for a few minutes and then try to draw it from memory. Compare the two drawings and discuss the differences.
2. Memory Challenge: Look at the same artwork or scene again and try to draw it from memory. Compare this drawing with the original and the previous memory drawing. Discuss the challenges and benefits of relying on observation and memory.
Fourth Grade Talking Points
- Observation is using our eyes and paying close attention to details. We can observe things in art, nature, and the world around us.
- When we draw something from memory, we are using our brains to remember what we saw. Sometimes our memories can be different from what we actually saw.
- It's important to use both observation and memory when creating or appreciating art. Observation helps us see things as they are, and memory helps us imagine and create new things.
