Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to apply basic arithmetic skills to solve problems related to Lego building and design.
Materials and Prep
Materials: Lego bricks of various sizes and colors
Prep: Familiarize yourself with the different Lego pieces and their sizes and shapes.
Activities
1. Lego Addition: Use Lego bricks to practice addition by combining different numbers of bricks together. For example, if you have 3 red bricks and 2 blue bricks, how many bricks do you have in total?
2. Lego Subtraction: Create a scenario with Lego bricks where you start with a certain number of bricks and remove some. Ask the student to figure out how many are left.
3. Lego Patterns: Build simple patterns using Lego bricks and ask the student to continue the pattern or create their own.
Second Grade Talking Points
- "Today, we are going to use Lego to learn about adding numbers together. Let's see how many bricks we have when we put them together."
- "Now, let's try taking away some bricks from our Lego structure. How many do we have left?"
- "Do you see the pattern in the way we are stacking the Lego bricks? Let's continue the pattern together."
