Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand and use fractions through a fun Lego activity.

Materials and Prep

You will need Lego bricks of different colors, a baseplate, and a clear workspace. Before starting the lesson, make sure you understand the concept of equal parts and basic addition and subtraction.

Activities

  • Activity 1: Equal Parts

Use the Lego bricks to create different shapes and divide them into equal parts. Discuss what fractions represent these equal parts.

  • Activity 2: Adding and Subtracting Fractions

Combine different colored Lego bricks and represent adding and subtracting fractions using the bricks. For example, if you have 2 red bricks and 3 blue bricks, what fraction of the total is red? What fraction is blue?

  • Activity 3: Building Fractions

Build a Lego tower using different colored bricks and represent fractions visually. For example, if the tower has 3 red bricks and 5 blue bricks, what fraction of the tower is red? What fraction is blue?

Second Grade Talking Points

  • "Fractions are like sharing a pizza. If the pizza is cut into 4 equal pieces, each piece is one-fourth of the pizza."
  • "When we add fractions, we combine the parts together. It's like putting two piles of Lego bricks into one big pile."
  • "Subtracting fractions means taking away some parts. It's like if we had 5 blue bricks and took away 2, we would have 3 left."
