Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to identify characters, settings, and main events in a story book.

Materials and Prep

  • Story book of choice
  • Quiet, comfortable reading area

No additional prep needed.

Activities

  • Read Aloud: Read the story book aloud to the student, pointing out characters and settings as you go.
  • Character Search: Have the student find and name the main character in the story book.
  • Setting Hunt: Ask the student to identify the different settings in the story book and describe them.
  • Retelling: Encourage the student to retell the main events of the story book in their own words.

Transitional-Kindergarten Grade Talking Points

  • Characters: "Who is the main character in the story? Can you point to them in the pictures?"
  • Settings: "Where does the story take place? Can you describe the place where the characters are?"
  • Main Events: "What happened in the beginning, middle, and end of the story? Can you tell me in your own words?"
