Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to recognize and appreciate patterns and shapes in visual art while practicing basic counting and mathematical concepts.
Materials and Prep
Materials:
- Blank paper
- Coloring materials (crayons, markers, or colored pencils)
- Scissors
- Glue
Prep:
- Prepare different shapes cut-outs from colored paper
- Set up a comfortable workspace for the student
Activities
1. Shape Collage: Encourage the student to create a collage using the prepared shapes. Have them count and name each shape as they glue it onto the paper.
2. Pattern Drawing: Ask the student to create a pattern using the coloring materials, such as red-blue-red-blue, and explain the concept of repeating sequences.
Preschool Grade Talking Points
- "Today, we are going to have fun with shapes and colors. Let's see how many shapes we can find in our art!"
- "Can you count with me as we glue the shapes onto the paper? Let's count together: one, two, three..."
- "Look at the pattern we made with the colors! It goes red, blue, red, blue. Can you say the colors with me?"
