Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand the different elements of Earth Science and how they relate to playing outside.
Materials and Prep
Materials:
- Sunscreen
- Water bottle
- Small shovel or spade
- Small plastic containers
Preparation:
- Check the weather forecast for the day
- Choose a safe outdoor location for the activities
Activities
1. Sun Safety: Discuss the importance of wearing sunscreen and staying hydrated when playing outside. Apply sunscreen and explain how it protects the skin from the sun's rays.
2. Soil Exploration: Use the shovel or spade to dig a small hole and examine the different layers of soil. Collect some soil samples in the plastic containers and observe the differences in texture and color.
Third Grade Talking Points
- "The sun can be very strong, so it's important to wear sunscreen to protect our skin. It's like wearing a shield against the sun's rays!"
- "When we play outside, it's important to drink water to stay hydrated. Just like plants need water to grow, our bodies need water to stay healthy."
- "Soil is like a big puzzle made up of different pieces. We can dig and explore the soil to see what it's made of, just like a scientist!"
