Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to understand basic arithmetic concepts and apply them to nature-related activities.
Materials and Prep
- Pencil and paper
- Nature-themed objects (leaves, rocks, flowers, etc.)
- No prior knowledge required
Activities
1. Nature Counting: Take a nature walk and have the student count the number of leaves, rocks, or flowers they see. Write down the numbers.
2. Nature Addition: Collect different nature items and create simple addition problems using them. For example, "If I have 2 rocks and find 3 more, how many rocks do I have in total?"
3. Nature Subtraction: Use the collected nature items to create subtraction problems. For example, "If I have 5 leaves and give 2 to a friend, how many leaves do I have left?"
Preschool Grade Talking Points
- "Let's count the leaves we see. 1, 2, 3... Can you count with me?"
- "Now, let's add the flowers we found. If we have 2 flowers and find 3 more, how many do we have altogether?"
- "Time to subtract! If we have 5 rocks and we give 2 to a friend, how many rocks are left with us?"
