Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand simple addition and subtraction using natural objects around you.
Materials and Prep
- Natural objects (leaves, rocks, flowers, etc.)
- Open space for outdoor exploration
- Enthusiasm for learning!
Activities
1. Nature Hunt: Go on a nature walk and collect different natural objects. Count and group them together based on their types (leaves, rocks, flowers).
2. Addition with Nature: Use the collected natural objects to create simple addition problems. For example, "If we have 2 rocks and find 3 more, how many rocks do we have in total?"
3. Subtraction with Nature: Similarly, use the natural objects to create subtraction problems. For example, "If we have 5 leaves and give 2 to a friend, how many leaves do we have left?"
Toddler Grade Talking Points
- "Look at these pretty leaves we found! Let's count how many we have together."
- "Now, let's put the rocks and leaves into two groups. How many are in each group?"
- "If we have 2 flowers and find 3 more, how many flowers do we have in total?"
- "Let's pretend the birds took 1 leaf from our collection. How many leaves do we have left?"
