Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand and perform basic addition and subtraction using fun activities.
Materials and Prep
Materials:
- Counting objects (e.g. buttons, toys, or snacks)
- Paper
- Crayons or markers
Prep:
- Prepare a set of counting objects for the activities
- Have paper and crayons ready for drawing and writing
Activities
1. Counting Fun: Use the counting objects to practice counting up to 10. Then, group them into two sets and count the total.
2. Addition Art: Draw a picture of your favorite animals or objects, then write an addition sentence to show how many are in the picture (e.g. 2 cats + 3 dogs = 5 animals).
3. Subtraction Story: Create a simple story about having some snacks and eating a few, then write a subtraction sentence to show how many are left (e.g. 6 cookies - 2 cookies = 4 cookies).
Kindergarten Grade Talking Points
- "We can count things like toys or snacks to learn numbers."
- "When we put things together, it's called addition. Like when we have 2 apples and 3 bananas, we can add them to get 5 fruits."
- "When we take things away, it's called subtraction. Like if we have 6 candies and we eat 2, we can subtract to find out how many are left."
