Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to use addition and subtraction to solve simple mathematical problems and apply these skills to build and count legos.

Materials and Prep

Materials: Legos

Prep: None

Activities

1. Lego Addition: Build a tower with 5 legos and add 3 more legos to it. Count the total number of legos in the tower.

2. Lego Subtraction: Build a tower with 8 legos and remove 4 legos from it. Count the remaining legos in the tower.

3. Lego Patterns: Create a pattern using different colored legos and count how many of each color you used.

First Grade Talking Points

  • "When we add legos together, we are putting them in a group to find out how many we have in total."
  • "Subtraction means taking away some legos from a group to see how many are left."
  • "Let's create a pattern with legos. A pattern is when we repeat a sequence of colors or shapes."
