Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand the basic principles of physics related to PC building and gaming, and apply them to build a gaming PC.
Materials and Prep
Materials:
- Computer components (e.g., CPU, GPU, RAM, motherboard, power supply)
- Screwdriver
- Thermal paste
- Anti-static wrist strap (optional)
Prep:
- Review the basic components of a computer and their functions
- Familiarize yourself with the process of building a PC
Activities
1. Explore the components: Research and discuss the function of each computer component in relation to gaming performance.
2. Build a virtual PC: Use online PC building simulators to virtually assemble a gaming PC and understand the physics behind component compatibility and placement.
3. Hands-on PC assembly: Apply the knowledge gained to physically assemble a PC, understanding the physics of heat dissipation, electrical connections, and component placement.
Eighth Grade Talking Points
- Understanding the CPU: "The CPU is like the brain of the computer, it processes all the instructions and calculations needed for gaming."
- Importance of the GPU: "The GPU, also known as the graphics card, is crucial for rendering high-quality graphics in games."
- Power supply and electrical flow: "The power supply unit provides electricity to all the components, like how a power source provides energy to a machine."
- Heat management with cooling systems: "Cooling systems like fans and heat sinks are important to keep the components from getting too hot and malfunctioning."
