Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand basic geometric shapes and their properties, and apply that knowledge to build a simple robot model using those shapes.

Materials and Prep

  • Construction paper in various colors
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Markers or crayons

No prior knowledge required. Just bring your creativity and enthusiasm!

Activities

  • Create a robot using basic geometric shapes such as squares, rectangles, circles, and triangles. Cut out the shapes from construction paper and glue them together to form the robot.
  • Discuss the properties of each shape used in the robot (e.g., a square has four equal sides, a triangle has three sides, etc.)
  • Decorate the robot with markers or crayons to give it a unique personality.

Kindergarten Grade Talking Points

  • "Today we are going to learn about shapes. Shapes are all around us, and we can use them to build things like our robot."
  • "Let's start by using a square for the robot's body. A square has four sides that are all the same length. Can you find something square-shaped in the room?"
  • "Now, we need to add a head to our robot. We can use a circle for the head. A circle is round like a ball. Can you think of something else that is round?"
  • "Next, let's give our robot some arms and legs. We can use rectangles for the arms and triangles for the legs. What other things can you think of that have arms and legs?"
  • "Finally, let's use our markers to add some colors and designs to our robot. What colors do you want to use? What do you think our robot's name should be?"
