Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand the basic functions and parts of the human body.
Materials and Prep
- Printed images of the human body (skeletal, muscular, digestive, respiratory, and circulatory systems)
- Whiteboard or large paper
- Markers or crayons
Prior knowledge required: Basic understanding of body parts (head, arms, legs, etc.)
Activities
-
Draw and Label
Ask the student to draw a simple outline of a human body on the whiteboard or paper. Then, together, label the body parts that they are familiar with (head, arms, legs, etc.).
-
Systems Exploration
Show the printed images of the human body systems one by one. Explain each system briefly and discuss its function. Encourage the student to ask questions and provide examples for each system.
-
Body Systems Puzzle
Print out images of the different body systems and cut them into puzzle pieces. Mix up the pieces and ask the student to assemble the puzzle by matching the systems to their functions.
First Grade Talking Points
- "Our bodies are made up of different parts that work together."
- "We have a skeleton inside our bodies that helps us stand and move."
