Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to identify and classify different types of angles and polygons.
Materials and Prep
- Pencil
- Blank paper
No prior knowledge or preparation is required for this lesson.
Activities
-
Draw an angle:
- Start by drawing a straight line on your paper.
- Choose a point on the line and mark it as the vertex of the angle.
- Draw two rays starting from the vertex and extending outwards to form the sides of the angle.
-
Classify angles:
- Measure the angles you drew using a protractor or estimation.
- Identify and label each angle as acute, right, obtuse, or straight.
-
Explore polygons:
- Draw different closed figures using straight lines.
- Count the number of sides and vertices of each figure.
- Classify the shapes as triangles, quadrilaterals, pentagons, hexagons, etc.
Seventh Grade Talking Points
- "Angles are formed by two rays with a common endpoint called the vertex."
- "An acute angle measures less than 90 degrees."
- "A right angle measures exactly 90 degrees."
- "An obtuse angle measures more than 90 degrees but less than 180 degrees."
- "A straight angle measures exactly 180 degrees."
- "Polygons are closed figures made up of straight line segments."
- "A triangle is a polygon with three sides and three vertices."
- "A quadrilateral is a polygon with four sides and four vertices."
- "A pentagon is a polygon with five sides and five vertices."
- "A hexagon is a polygon with six sides and six vertices."
