Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to identify and locate different countries on a world map.
Materials and Prep
- World map (printed or drawn)
- Pencil
- Coloring pencils or markers
Prior knowledge: Basic understanding of continents and major oceans.
Activities
-
Start by reviewing the continents and major oceans with the student. Ask them to name each continent and ocean, and provide any necessary guidance.
-
Show the student the world map and explain that they will be identifying and locating different countries.
Begin with a country that the student is familiar with, such as their own country. Ask them to locate and label it on the map using a pencil.
-
Next, choose a few other countries and provide the student with clues to help them locate those countries. For example, you could say, "This country is known for its pyramids and the Nile River. Can you find it on the map?"
Allow the student to search for the country and label it on the map.
-
Continue this activity with more countries, using different clues each time. Encourage the student to use their knowledge of geography and any additional resources they may have.
-
Once the student has located and labeled several countries, give them coloring pencils or markers to color in each country on the map.
Fifth Grade Talking Points
- "Geography is the study of the Earth's physical features, climate, and how people interact with their environment."
- "Continents are large land masses that are separated by oceans. There are seven continents on Earth: Africa, Antarctica, Asia, Europe, North America, Australia, and South America."
- "Oceans are vast bodies of saltwater that cover most of the Earth's surface. The major oceans are the Atlantic Ocean, Pacific Ocean, Indian Ocean, Southern Ocean, and Arctic Ocean."
- "Countries are smaller areas of land within continents. Each country has its own unique culture, language, and government."
- "By locating and labeling countries on a map, we can understand more about the world and how different places are connected."
