Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to apply basic arithmetic skills to solve problems related to building cardboard cat houses.
Materials and Prep
- Cardboard
- Scissors
- Markers or crayons
- Ruler or measuring tape
Prior knowledge required: Understanding of addition and subtraction.
Activities
- Create a floor plan: Have the student draw a blueprint of their ideal cardboard cat house on a piece of cardboard. They should include rooms, doors, and windows.
- Measure and cut: Using a ruler or measuring tape, guide the student in measuring and cutting the cardboard pieces needed for each part of the cat house, such as walls, roof, and floor.
- Calculate the total area: Help the student find the area of each cardboard piece by multiplying the length and width. Then, have them add up the areas to find the total area of the cat house.
- Add decorations: Let the student use markers or crayons to add creative decorations to the cardboard pieces before assembling the cat house.
- Assemble the cat house: Assist the student in putting the cardboard pieces together to build the cat house based on their blueprint.
Second Grade Talking Points
- "Today, we are going to use our math skills to build cardboard cat houses!"
- "We will start by drawing a blueprint of our cat house, just like architects do when designing buildings."
- "Next, we will measure and cut the cardboard pieces needed for each part of the cat house. We need to make sure they are the right size."
- "To find the total area of the cat house, we will multiply the length and width of each cardboard piece and then add them all together."
- "Once we have all the pieces ready, we can add decorations to make our cat houses unique and fun!"
- "Finally, we will assemble the cardboard pieces together to build our cat houses. It's like putting a puzzle together."
