Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to identify and describe coniferous trees, and understand their importance in nature.

Materials and Prep

  • Internet access (optional)
  • Books or magazines about trees (optional)
  • Paper and crayons or colored pencils

Activities

  1. Start by discussing with the student what they already know about trees. Ask questions such as:

    • What are some types of trees you have seen?
    • What do trees provide for us?
    • What do trees need to grow?
  2. Introduce the concept of coniferous trees. Explain that coniferous trees are a type of tree that have needle-like leaves and produce cones. They are often found in colder regions and can stay green all year round.

  3. Show pictures or drawings of different coniferous trees and discuss their characteristics. Ask the student to identify the needle-like leaves and cones.

  4. If possible, go outside and observe any coniferous trees in the area. Point out their distinct features and encourage the student to touch the needles or cones (if safe to do so).

  5. Ask the student to draw their own coniferous tree. They can include details like the needle-like leaves and cones. Encourage them to be creative!

  6. Have a discussion about the importance of coniferous trees. Explain that they provide shelter and food for animals, help clean the air, and are often used for lumber and paper.
