Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to create a Roman mosaic artwork using basic materials.

Materials and Prep

  • Cardboard or thick paper
  • Colored paper or construction paper
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Pencils
  • Ruler
  • Reference images of Roman mosaics (can be found online)

No prior knowledge or preparation is required for this lesson.

Activities

  1. Introduce the topic of Roman mosaics and show examples of different designs.
  2. Explain the basic process of creating a mosaic: cutting small colored paper squares and arranging them to form a pattern or image.
  3. Provide the students with a piece of cardboard or thick paper as the base for their mosaic.
  4. Ask the students to choose a simple pattern or image from the reference images and sketch it lightly on the cardboard using a pencil and ruler.
  5. Show the students how to cut small squares from colored paper and glue them onto the cardboard to create their mosaic design.
  6. Encourage creativity and experimentation with colors and patterns.
  7. Allow the students time to complete their mosaic artwork.
  8. Once finished, have a class discussion where students can share and explain their designs.
