Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will understand the concepts of evolution and natural selection and be able to explain how they contribute to the diversity of life on Earth.

Materials and Prep

  • Pen and paper
  • Access to the internet or a library for research
  • Basic knowledge of biology and the scientific method

Activities

  1. Research and Explain: Start by researching and understanding the basic concepts of evolution and natural selection. Write a brief explanation of each concept in your own words.

  2. Case Study: Choose an animal species that you find interesting. Research its evolutionary history and how natural selection has influenced its adaptations. Write a short report or create a presentation to share your findings.

  3. Simulation Game: Create a simulation game to demonstrate how natural selection works. Use different colored candies or objects to represent different traits. Create an environment with limited resources and simulate multiple generations of "organisms" competing for survival. Observe how certain traits become more prevalent over time.

  4. Discussion: Reflect on the case study and simulation game. Discuss how the concepts of evolution and natural selection apply to real-life situations and the impact they have on the diversity of life on Earth.

Australia: Year 7 Talking Points

  • "Evolution is the process of change in all forms of life over generations."
  • "Natural selection is the mechanism through which evolution occurs. It is the process by which certain traits become more or less common in a population over time."
  • "Australia is home to unique and diverse wildlife, with many species found nowhere else in the world."
  • "The isolation of Australia as an island continent has contributed to the evolution of distinct species through natural selection."
  • "Examples of unique Australian species shaped by natural selection include the kangaroo, platypus, and koala."
  • "Understanding evolution and natural selection helps us appreciate and protect the biodiversity of Australia and the world."
