Materials and Prep
- Lego bricks (various colors and sizes)
- Number cards (0-9)
- Counting cards (1-10)
- Small container or bag to hold the cards
- Clear workspace
No prior knowledge or preparation is required for this lesson.
Activities

Counting with Lego:
- Place the counting cards in a pile facedown.
- Take a card from the top of the pile and read the number out loud.
- Count out the corresponding number of Lego bricks and stack them neatly.
- Repeat this process for all the counting cards.
-
Addition with Lego:
- Choose two number cards randomly.
- Place the corresponding number of Lego bricks for each card in separate piles.
- Combine the two piles and count the total number of bricks.
- Use the bricks to build a tower with the height equal to the total.
- Repeat this process with different number cards.
-
Subtraction with Lego:
- Choose two number cards randomly.
- Place the corresponding number of Lego bricks for each card in separate piles.
- Take away the bricks from one pile according to the number on the other card.
- Count the remaining bricks and use them to build a structure.
- Repeat this process with different number cards.
Kindergarten Grade Talking Points
- "Today, we are going to have fun with Lego bricks while practicing our math skills."
- "We will start by counting the number of Lego bricks and stacking them neatly."
- "Next, we will learn about addition. This means combining two sets of Lego bricks to find the total."
- "We will also learn about subtraction. This means taking away some Lego bricks from a pile."
- "Remember, math is like building with Lego. We can use numbers to create and solve problems!"
