Objective

By the end of this lesson, the homeschool student will be able to develop and consolidate their aural and theory skills in Language Arts: Writing.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper
  • Pencil or pen
  • Computer or tablet with internet access (optional)

No prior knowledge or preparation is required for this lesson.

Activities

  1. Activity 1: Free Writing
  2. Have the student engage in free writing for 10 minutes. They can choose any topic they like and simply write without worrying about grammar or spelling. Encourage them to let their thoughts flow freely and to focus on developing their aural skills by listening to their own thoughts as they write.

  3. Activity 2: Sentence Expansion
  4. Provide the student with a simple sentence, such as "The cat sat on the mat." Ask them to expand on this sentence by adding more details, descriptive words, or additional clauses. Encourage them to think about how they can make the sentence more interesting and engaging to the reader. This activity will help consolidate their theory skills in constructing sentences effectively.

  5. Activity 3: Storytelling
  6. Ask the student to create a short story based on a given prompt or theme. They can use their imagination and creativity to develop characters, plot, and setting. Encourage them to incorporate dialogue and descriptive language to enhance the aural experience of the story. This activity will allow them to practice both their aural and theory skills in storytelling and structuring narratives.
