By the end of this lesson, the student will have developed and consolidated their aural and theory skills in music.

Materials and Prep

• Instrument (e.g., piano, guitar, recorder, etc.)
• Sheet music or music theory book
• Pencil and paper

No prior knowledge is required for this lesson.

Activities

1. Warm-up Exercise: Play a familiar song on the instrument of your choice. Ask the student to listen carefully and identify the melody, rhythm, and any harmonies or accompaniment present.

2. Interval Identification: Choose a starting note and play a series of different intervals (e.g., major 2nd, perfect 4th, minor 6th, etc.). Ask the student to identify each interval by name.

3. Key Signature Practice: Select a key signature and ask the student to write down all the notes in that key. Then, play a short melody in that key and have the student identify the key signature being used.

4. Rhythm Dictation: Create a simple rhythm pattern using quarter notes, eighth notes, and rests. Play the pattern on your instrument and have the student notate it on paper.

5. Chord Progression Analysis: Choose a song and play the chord progression on your instrument. Ask the student to identify the chords being played (e.g., I, IV, V). Discuss the function of each chord within the progression.
