- Printed handouts of the American flag
Before the lesson, familiarize yourself with the United States Constitution, the Pledge of Allegiance, the Bill of Rights, and the symbolism of the American flag.
Activities

Start the lesson by discussing what government is and why it is important. Explain that government is a system that helps make and enforce laws, protect citizens, and provide services.

Show the student the United States Constitution and explain its significance. Discuss how it is the supreme law of the land and outlines the rights and responsibilities of citizens.

Introduce the Pledge of Allegiance and explain its meaning. Have the student practice reciting the pledge together.

Discuss the Bill of Rights and its importance in protecting the rights of citizens. Go through each amendment briefly and provide examples to help the student understand.
