Objective
By the end of this lesson, the Grade 1 homeschool student will be able to create their own soap using basic materials.
Materials and Prep
- Glycerin soap base
- Soap molds
- Soap coloring (optional)
- Soap fragrance (optional)
- Knife (with adult supervision)
- Microwave or double boiler
- Measuring spoons
- Measuring cup
- Parchment paper or wax paper
Prior to the lesson, make sure the student understands basic safety precautions when handling hot objects and using a knife with adult supervision.
Activities
- Introduction to Soap Making: Explain to the student what soap making is and how it can be a fun and creative activity.
- Soap Base Preparation: Show the student how to cut the glycerin soap base into small cubes, using the knife with adult supervision.
- Melting the Soap Base: Demonstrate how to melt the soap base using either a microwave or a double boiler.
- Adding Color and Fragrance: Discuss with the student the option of adding soap coloring and fragrance to the melted soap base. Let them choose their preferred colors and scents.
- Pouring and Setting: Guide the student in pouring the melted soap base into the soap molds. Allow the soap to cool and set for a few hours or overnight.
- Unmolding and Using: Once the soap has completely hardened, show the student how to carefully remove the soap from the molds. Explain how to use the soap for personal hygiene.
