Objective
By the end of this lesson, the Grade 2 homeschool student will be able to appreciate and create visual arts inspired by fairy tales.
Materials and Prep
- Paper
- Pencils
- Coloring materials (crayons, colored pencils, markers)
- Fairy tale books or stories
- Optional: Art prints or images of famous fairy tale illustrations

Activities
- Introduction to Fairy Tales (10 minutes)
Read a fairy tale story or show pictures from a fairy tale book to introduce the concept and spark the student's interest. - Discussion on Visual Arts in Fairy Tales (10 minutes)
Talk about how visual arts, such as illustrations, play an important role in bringing fairy tales to life. Discuss different art styles and techniques that can be used to depict characters, settings, and magical elements in fairy tales. - Create Fairy Tale Character (20 minutes)
Have the student choose a favorite fairy tale character and encourage them to draw their own version of the character. They can add details and use colors to make the character come alive on paper. - Create Fairy Tale Setting (20 minutes)
Ask the student to think about a specific scene or setting from a fairy tale and draw it on a separate sheet of paper. Encourage them to use their imagination and include elements that make the setting magical and enchanting. - Share and Discuss Artwork (10 minutes)
Allow the student to share their artwork with you or other family members. Discuss their choices, creativity, and what they enjoyed most about creating their fairy tale-inspired art.
