Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to use basic arithmetic skills to solve problems related to Hot Wheels track building.
Materials and Prep
- Hot Wheels cars
- Hot Wheels track pieces
- Counting objects (e.g. blocks, buttons, or coins)
- Paper and pencil
Before starting the lesson, make sure you have a good understanding of counting and basic addition and subtraction.
Activities
-
Counting Hot Wheels Cars
Start by counting the number of Hot Wheels cars you have. Write down the number on a piece of paper.
-
Building Hot Wheels Tracks
Use your Hot Wheels track pieces to build different tracks. Count the number of track pieces you use for each track and write it down.
-
Addition and Subtraction with Hot Wheels
Choose two different tracks you have built. Count the total number of track pieces for both tracks and write it down. Then, subtract the number of track pieces for one track from the total. Write down the result. Finally, add the number of track pieces for the other track to the result. Write down the final total.
Preschool Grade Talking Points
- "Mathematics is all about numbers and counting. Today, we will use our counting skills to solve problems related to Hot Wheels track building."
- "Counting is important because it helps us know how many things we have. Can you count how many cars we have?"
- "When we build Hot Wheels tracks, we can count how many track pieces we use. Let's see how many pieces we need for each track."
- "Sometimes, we need to add or subtract numbers to find the total. We will do that with our track pieces. Can you subtract the number of pieces for one track from the total?"
- "Great job! Now, let's add the number of pieces for the other track to find the final total."
