Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to understand basic arithmetic concepts using their interest in Cars Hot Wheels.
Materials and Prep
- Cars Hot Wheels (at least 10)
- Paper and pencils
No prior knowledge is required for this lesson.
Activities
-
Counting Cars:
Ask the student to count the number of Cars Hot Wheels they have. Write down the number.
-
Adding and Subtracting Cars:
Give the student a specific number of Cars Hot Wheels (e.g., 5) and ask them to add or subtract a certain number of cars (e.g., add 2 more cars or subtract 3 cars). Let them physically manipulate the cars to solve the problems.
-
Sorting Cars:
Have the student sort their Cars Hot Wheels into different groups based on specific characteristics (e.g., color, size, type). Count the number of cars in each group and discuss which group has the most/least cars.
Talking Points
-
Counting:
"Counting is when we say numbers in order. Let's count the Cars Hot Wheels together."
-
Adding:
"Adding means putting things together. If we have 3 Cars Hot Wheels and we add 2 more, how many cars do we have in total?"
-
Subtracting:
"Subtracting means taking things away. If we have 5 Cars Hot Wheels and we take away 3, how many cars are left?"
-
Sorting:
"Sorting means putting things into groups based on specific characteristics. Let's sort the Cars Hot Wheels by color. How many cars do we have in each color group?"
