Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to identify and discuss key Roman Emperors and their contributions to ancient Rome.

Activities

  1. Create a Roman Emperors timeline:

    Using the information gathered from research, the student will create a timeline of Roman Emperors. They should include the name of the emperor, their reign dates, and a brief description of their accomplishments or notable events during their rule.

  2. Design a trading card game:

    The student will create a trading card game featuring Roman Emperors. Each card should include the emperor's name, an illustration, and key facts about their reign. The game can be played with friends or family, with each player using their knowledge of the emperors to win.

  3. Write a letter from a Roman Emperor:

    The student will choose a Roman Emperor and write a creative letter from their perspective. The letter should showcase the emperor's personality, accomplishments, and challenges they faced during their rule. The student can use historical knowledge and imagination to bring the emperor to life.

  • Julius Caesar: "Julius Caesar was a famous Roman general and politician. He played a crucial role in the transition of Rome from a republic to an empire. He was known for his military conquests and his assassination in 44 BCE."

  • Augustus: "Augustus, also known as Octavian, was the first Roman Emperor. He brought stability and prosperity to Rome, initiating the Pax Romana, a period of relative peace and cultural growth. He ruled from 27 BCE to 14 CE."

  • Nero: "Nero was a controversial Roman Emperor known for his tyrannical rule and extravagant lifestyle. He famously blamed Christians for the Great Fire of Rome in 64 CE. His reign ended in 68 CE."

  • Hadrian: "Hadrian was a Roman Emperor who focused on strengthening the empire's borders and promoting cultural development. He is best known for building Hadrian's Wall in Britain. He ruled from 117 to 138 CE."

  • Constantine: "Constantine was a significant Roman Emperor who legalized Christianity in the Roman Empire and moved the capital to Constantinople (modern-day Istanbul). He ruled from 306 to 337 CE."
