Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand and perform basic arithmetic operations, such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
Materials and Prep
- Pencil
- Blank paper
- Calculator (optional)
No prior knowledge is required for this lesson.
Activities
- Activity 1: Addition Race - Grab your pencil and paper. Write down two numbers and try to add them as fast as you can. Challenge yourself to beat your previous time.
- Activity 2: Subtraction Challenge - Write down a subtraction problem and solve it. Then, create a new problem for your parent or sibling to solve.
- Activity 3: Multiplication Bingo - Create a 3x3 grid on your paper. Fill each box with a number from 1 to 9. Ask your parent to call out multiplication problems (e.g., 2 x 3) and try to find the answer on your grid. Mark the answers with an 'X' until you get three in a row.
- Activity 4: Division Puzzles - Write down a division problem and solve it. Then, create a puzzle for your parent to solve by giving them the quotient and divisor, and asking them to find the dividend.
Talking Points
- Addition: "Addition is combining two or more numbers to find the total. For example, if you have 3 apples and someone gives you 2 more, how many apples do you have in total?"
- Subtraction: "Subtraction is taking away one number from another to find the difference. For instance, if you have 7 candies and you eat 3 of them, how many candies will be left?"
- Multiplication: "Multiplication is a way of adding groups of the same number. If you have 4 bags, and each bag has 5 marbles, how many marbles do you have in total?"
- Division: "Division is splitting a number into equal parts. If you have 12 cookies and you want to share them equally among 3 friends, how many cookies will each friend get?"
