- Pen and paper
Prior knowledge of basic American history is helpful but not required.
Activities
- Activity 1: Map Exploration - Have the student locate and label the areas involved in the French and Indian War on a map of North America. Discuss the significance of these areas in relation to the conflict.
- Activity 2: Timeline Creation - In chronological order, have the student create a timeline of major events during the French and Indian War. Encourage them to include dates, descriptions, and illustrations for each event.
- Activity 3: Role Play - Assign the student a role (e.g., British soldier, French settler, Native American leader) and have them imagine and act out a scene from the French and Indian War. Encourage them to think about the perspectives and motivations of their assigned character.
- Activity 4: Research and Report - Ask the student to choose one aspect of the French and Indian War that interests them (e.g., a specific battle, a key figure) and conduct research using books or online resources. Have them prepare a short report or presentation to share their findings with you.
Talking Points
- Causes of the War: The French and Indian War started because the French and British wanted control over the land in North America. They both had different ideas about how the land should be used and who should have power.
- Major Events: One important event was the Battle of Quebec in 1759. The British won this battle and it was a turning point in the war. Another important event was the Treaty of Paris in 1763, which ended the war and gave the British control over a lot of land in North America.
- Impact on American History: The French and Indian War had a big impact on American history. It changed the balance of power in North America and led to tensions between the British and American colonists, which eventually led to the American Revolution.
- Key Figures: Some important figures during the French and Indian War were General Edward Braddock, who led British forces, and Chief Pontiac, a Native American leader who fought against the British after the war ended.
