Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to recognize and read words containing the WOR- phonics pattern.

Materials and Prep

  • Whiteboard or paper
  • Dry erase marker or pen

Activities

  • Word Hunt: Give the student a list of words containing the WOR- pattern. Have them find and circle the WOR- pattern in each word. Encourage them to read the words aloud as they find them.
  • Word Sort: Provide the student with a set of word cards, some containing the WOR- pattern and others without. Have them sort the cards into two groups: words with WOR- and words without. Ask them to read each word before placing it in the correct group.
  • Word Building: Write the letters W, O, and R on the whiteboard or paper. Ask the student to come up with as many words as they can by adding different beginning sounds or word endings to the WOR- pattern. Encourage them to read each word they create.
  • Read and Draw: Provide the student with a short passage or story containing words with the WOR- pattern. After reading the passage, ask them to choose one word with WOR- and draw a picture representing its meaning. Have them share their drawing and explain why they chose that word.

Talking Points

  • What is the WOR- pattern? The WOR- pattern is a group of letters that appear together in words and make a specific sound. When we see WOR- in a word, we know it will sound like "wor".
  • Why is it important to recognize the WOR- pattern? Recognizing the WOR- pattern helps us read and understand words more easily. When we see WOR-, we know how to say it and it helps us figure out the meaning of the word.
  • How can we practice reading words with the WOR- pattern? We can practice by doing activities like word hunts, word sorts, word building, and reading passages with WOR- words. These activities help us become better readers and improve our phonics skills.
  • Can you give me an example of a word with the WOR- pattern? Sure! One example is the word "work". When we see WOR- in the word "work", we know it sounds like "wor" and we can read it as "work".
